Pookote Lake – An Ideal Picnic Spot
A must visit destination on your tour of Wayanad, Pookote Lake is a stunning location. This small, natural fresh water lake, about 3 kilometers from Vythiri town is undoubtedly the most beautiful and frequented tourist spot in the whole of Wayanad.
The pathway around the lake is lined by thick bushes and tall trees which further add to the overall charm. One of the main tributaries of the Kabani River, the Panamaram rivulet originates from Pookot Lake and then spills down into Panamaram valley.
The area surrounding the lake provides recreational facilities to the visitors. It has well-maintained gardens, a cafeteria, paddle and row boats for hire, a fresh water aquarium, and a small emporium selling handicrafts. Visitors can enjoy a boat ride against the serene backdrop, but swimming is not encouraged. The recreational facilities are arranged by District Tourism Promotion Council. The fresh water aquarium with wide varieties of fishes is managed by the Fisheries Department and is a major attraction for tourists.
The shops in the vicinity sell produce such as herbal medicines, honey and spices from the tribal hamlets in the region. Pookot Lake makes an ideal picnic spot. A nominal entrance fee is charged. You also have to pay a nominal fee to take your camera inside. Pookote Lake is 35km from Banasura Hill Resort.
